ANPR Transmission
Introduction

Since March 2005 the Association of Chief Police Officers of England, Wales and Northern Ireland (ACPO) have been implemented a strategy for ANPR (Automatic Numberplate Recognition) for the police service.  A strategy designed to with the key objective of denying criminals use of our roads.

The strategy – backed by government funding – set out a plan to develop a network of ANPR-enabled CCTV cameras and readers located nationally at strategic sites linked to the central ANPR data centre and supported by new ‘intercept’ teams of police enforcement.

Based around roadside CCTV, ANPR solutions deliver a snapshot of the passing vehicle’s registration number which is immediately run against the national database to flag up a range of offences from stolen vehicles to non-payment of tax and insurance.

For the police to be able effectively use ANPR data it needs to be transmitted and checked speedily so that the intercept team can act on it in a timely fashion and the transmission media needs to be sufficiently secure and robust that it can’t be jammed or hacked by the more sophisticated criminals.

BT BT Redcare’s high-quality fixed and wireless CCTV and video data transmission solutions have been widely used as a secure and reliable solution for ANPR communications across the UK from roadside to control room, combined with BT Transcomm’s Mobile Data Terminal that provides in-vehicle information back to the police intercept teams securely and speedily.
